Transportation Commission to hold community meeting focusing on Spokane area transportation efforts – Virtual Meeting Sept. 21 & 22

OLYMPIA – Community leaders and local officials from the Spokane regional area will meet virtually
with the Washington State Transportation Commission next week to share their perspectives on
transportation issues, challenges, and needs.

The meeting will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 21, from 1 to 5 p.m., and reconvene on Wednesday,
Sept. 22, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Due to limitations on the size of gatherings in response to COVID-19,
this meeting will be conducted virtually using Zoom Webinar. People interested in attending can
register on the commission’s website. The meeting will be broadcast live on TVW at www.tvw.org.

On Tuesday, the Spokane Regional Transportation Council will brief the commission on the region’s
rural and urban transportation needs. Representatives of Spokane County will cover the challenges and
approaches to maintaining a large county road system in a mix of rural and urban environments. And
staff from the City of Spokane will brief the commission on the delivery of its 20-year local levy
investments.

Tuesday’s meeting will end with briefings on transportation and economic development. The
commission will hear how the Spokane Airport’s capital projects and plans support growth of the
regional multimodal freight network, increase demand for air service and drive economic development.
Greater Spokane Inc. and the Greater Spokane Valley Chamber will give a presentation on the
connections between economic vitality and the transportation network, highlighting how air, highway
and rail networks affect economic development in Spokane County.

During Wednesday’s session, the commission will learn about how the Spokane Transit Authority is
delivering projects in the voter-approved, 10-year Moving Forward Plan. Next, Spokane’s three
public development authorities will brief the commission on various approaches to advancing
economic development in the county, based on the needs of each authority’s geographic area and
unique transportation demands. The commission will hear from the Kalispel Tribe on its efforts to
develop trust land in Spokane County and how that development connects to the local transportation
system.

The meeting concludes with a multijurisdictional panel that will discuss the North Spokane Corridor
project, providing an overview of the project, its impact to the area, and how communities have been
involved in the project design and advancement. Local partners will discuss both short- and long-term
impacts of the NSC on their organizations and constituencies.
