It's been colder and wetter in the last couple of weeks, and I am sure you have noticed it getting dark early. The calendar explains this phenomena, today is of course the Equinox, officially arriving at 21:18 UTC (Universal Coordinated Time), that's 2:18 pm Pacific. So Summer will be over here this afternoon, and it's going to keep getting dark earlier every day for three months. Of course, for a good number of you in Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa, you can look forward to longer days and the start of Spring.
Today is the time when the days and nights are equal, so today's quotes relate to Balance.
“There are as many nights as days, and the one is just as long as the other in the year's course. Even a happy life cannot be without a measure of darkness, and the word ‘happy' would lose its meaning if it were not balanced by sadness.”
– Carl Gustav Jung, 1875 – 1961
“The American way is the way most law-abiding Americans live – in debt. Does this make a balanced budget un-American?”
– Cullen Hightower, 1923 – 2008
“Action is at bottom a swinging and flailing of the arms to regain one's balance and keep afloat.”
– Eric Hoffer, 1902 – 1983
“If we could learn how to balance rest against effort, calmness against strain, quiet against turmoil, we would assure ourselves of joy in living and psychological health for life.”
– Josephine Rathbone
“Every man should view himself as equally balanced: half good and half evil. Likewise, he should see the entire world as half good and half evil…. With a single good deed he will tip the scales for himself, and for the entire world, to the side of good.”
– Moshe ben Maimon (Maimonides), 1135 – 1204
“Strength of character does not consist solely in having powerful feelings, but in maintaining one's balance in spite of them.”
– Carl von Clausewitz, 1780 – 1831
High Tower had it right. I’m capturing that one for future reference.
